LOS ANGELES — Sweeping closures of all bars, nightclubs, entertainment venues, and gyms were ordered Monday across Los Angeles County.

The mandate followed a Sunday evening order from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to close the city's bars, nightclubs, gyms, and entertainment venues, in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Earlier on Monday, Pasadena followed L.A.'s lead, ordering the immediate closure of bars and gyms in the city to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Restaurants across the county may remain open for the time-being, but only for takeout and delivery service.

Under county orders, the following establishments must close to the public:

  • Bars
  • Nightclubs

  • Gyms
  • Fitness studios
  • Dine-in restaurants

Grocery stores will remain open.

"These are the emergency steps we are taking to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 & protect people across LA, effective at midnight tonight," wrote Garcetti in a tweet Sunday, explaining the order. "This isn't easy & I don't make this decision lightly. We will do everything we can to help businesses & workers impacted during this time."

The order went into effect at 12 a.m. Monday, March 16 and is set to remain in effect through March 31.
