CARSON, Calif. — When the weather is nice outside, Jan Victor Andasan looks forward to enjoying the outdoors when they can. But depending on the air quality in Carson and surrounding areas, Andasan usually prefers to find a place to hang out indoors to avoid triggering their asthma.
Senate Bill 674, could create an air monitoring standard in the state for communities near refineries and related sites, a public notification system via text and email when there are over emissions and places a requirement for third-party audits of the monitoring system.
While environmental justice groups like the East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice are hoping to see the bill passed, organizations like the Western States Petroleum Association say that it could lead to higher costs for fuels.
Last year, the Los Angeles Almanac recorded only 92 good air quality days in Los Angeles County.
