ANAHEIM, Calif. — This summer, Disney California Adventure visitors will have a chance to fist-bump Baymax and say "bah-a-la-la-la."
The lovable, marshmallow-like, robotic personal health care companion will now have a permanent home at Disneyland.
Disney officials said Monday that the fictional land of "Big Hero 6" and Baymax is coming to Disneyland California Adventure this summer as part of the Disney 100 anniversary celebration of the company.
San Fransokyo Square will be a "vibrant, multicultural district of neighborhood restaurants and small businesses where you'll be able to eat and shop," wrote Kelsey Lynch, a public relations director at Disneyland, in the official Disney Parks blog.
Walt Disney Imagineering began working on transforming the Pacific Wharf into the fictional mash-up city of San Fransokyo (San Francisco and Tokyo) at Disney California Adventure shortly after the company announced it at the D23 Expo Disney convention last summer.
The land's entrance will have an iconic look — almost like a reimagining of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.
Imagineers are transforming the Pacific Wharf Bridge, which has served as an entrance connecting the Paradise Gardens and the wharf, into the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge — a red steel bridge with distinctive curved beams commonly seen in Japanese architecture.
Once inside the reimagined San Fransokyo Square, visitors will see floating wind turbines on a fishing net tannery building, Disney officials said.
Baymax, the lovable white inflatable computerized robot and star of the 2014 “Big Hero 6” animated movie, will be housed inside a warehouse at the south end of the fictional city for meet-and-greet opportunities and fist bumps.
Disney officials said none of the current Pacific Wharf eateries — the Ghirardelli, Boudin Bakery Tour, and others — would be displaced after the transformation. They also plan to add more Asian-inspired selections and a beer garden.
Disney did not give a specific opening date for San Fransokyo Square.
The Pacific Wharf at Disney California Adventure is one of the original areas of the theme park, which opened in 2001.
