LONG BEACH, Calif. — With his intimidating 7-foot-one-inch height, 300-pound stature and nimble moves on the basketball court, Shaquille O'Neal terrorized opponents in the NBA for nearly 20 years.
Opponents feared him. O’Neal maybe even haunted their dreams.
Now, the former Los Angeles Laker is bringing a new kind of terror and haunt outside of the basketball court.
The 15-time all-star has teamed up with ABG Entertainment and Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group to produce Shaqtoberfest, a new family-friendly Halloween event this fall at the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
“Halloween can’t come soon enough,” said O’Neal in a news release. “Thirteenth Floor Entertainment and I have some tricks up our sleeves to make this the most spooktacular Halloween event ever.”
Built in 1930, the Queen Mary operated as a cruise ship and carried military personnel during World War II until its retirement in 1967. The vessel has been docked and become a floating hotel in the Long Beach Harbor.
The ship is closed and currently undergoing a $5 million renovation. It’s slated to reopen later this year.
The Queen Mary ship has long been a favorite haunted and paranormal hot spot during Halloween. When it was open, the ship offered haunted and paranormal tours both day and night, as well as during the fall Halloween season. Many of its areas were converted into haunted mazes.
According to its website, visitors have claimed to encounter a ghostly lady in white and children throughout the ship.
Shaqtoberfest officials said O’Neal plans to add his haunted twist to the occasion.
The event, which will run from late September through Halloween, will offer trick-or-treating, games, food and drinks, haunted trails and themed areas, and other live entertainment that matches O’Neal’s larger-than-life personality. O’Neal will work with Thirteenth Floor Entertainment, the company that produced the annual LA Haunted Hayride at Griffith Park.
Officials said O’Neal plans to narrate some of the mazes as visitors go through.
“Fans of all ages are going to have the time of their lives celebrating Halloween with Shaq,” said Matt Goldstein, SVP of entertainment and special projects at ABG Entertainment.
Ticket prices and sales will be announced soon.
