LOS ANGELES (CNS) — The Japanese anime epic "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train" edged out "Mortal Kombat" in a spirited battle of fantasy/action films, earning $6.4 million to lead the North American box office this weekend, according to industry estimates out Sunday.
"Mortal Kombat" grossed $6.2 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported.
Both films are in their second week of release, and opened at No. 1-2 last weekend with "Mortal Kombat" in the No. 1 spot.
"Godzilla vs. Kong" was third this weekend with $2.7 million, and has grossed more than $90 million domestically in its five weeks in theaters.
"Separation" was fourth, opening with $1.831 million, followed by "Raya and the Last Dragon" with $1.335 million.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were "Nobody" ($1.26 million), "The Unholy" ($1.06 million), "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" ($720,000), "Tom & Jerry" ($515,000) and "Together Together" ($313,051).
