UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — Cue the iconic Super Mario Bros. theme music.
Two years after opening the first Super Nintendo World in Japan, the highly anticipated Super Nintendo World land at Universal Studios Hollywood will open on Feb. 17, Universal Studios officials announced Wednesday.
The Super Mario Bros.-themed land, built on the lower lot next to Transformers: The Ride 3D, began construction in 2019 and will feature an array of new immersive and interactive experiences from the video game franchise, such as jumping up to punch yellow question mark blocks for coins and themed dining in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Universal officials said that aside from meeting Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach, visitors could dine at the Toadstool Café and order Super Mario Bros. themed-entrees such as the Super Mushroom Soup, Piranha Plant Caprese, and Princess Peach Cupcake.
Inside the land, visitors could purchase a power band, sync it up with a Universal Studios Hollywood app, and perform challenges enabling them to collect digital coins and keys and rack up individual or team scores.
And guests could see and enter Bowser's Castle, where the land's signature ride, "Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge," is situated.
Here, Universal officials said visitors would wear augmented reality goggles and climb aboard a four-seat Mario Kart vehicle to race in one of the most innovative and immersive theme park attractions they will ever experience.
The new themed land is based on Nintendo's most famous video game franchise, "Super Mario Bros," which has sold hundreds of millions of units worldwide since first appearing in the early 1980s.
Universal partnered with video game developer Nintendo to build the themed lands in their theme parks.
The first Super Nintendo World opened at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, Japan, in 2021. The company plans to open another one at its Orlando theme parks in 2025.
