The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed new regulations for automakers that would mandate the use of more evolved automatic emergency braking systems in passenger vehicles.

So-called AEB technology automatically applies the brakes to avoid rear-end collisions when drivers fail to react, but they aren't 100% failsafe.

NHTSA is suggesting that AEB systems be evolved in vehicles to automatically stop and avoid hitting pedestrians at speeds up to 37 mph and be able to brake and stop to avoid hitting stopped or slow-moving vehicles at speeds up to 62 mph.

They would also need to perform well at night.
