CARSON, Calif. – Gameday starts on the grill and second-generation chargers fan Trevor Salazar shares the good food and memories with his dad, Charles.

He has been a season ticket holder for 20 years, back then driving all the way to San Diego.

“Waking up at the crack of dawn and driving two hours to the stadium,” the senior Salazar said.

Poetically enough, he is now one of the workers building the new Sofi Stadium, which will be shared by both the Rams and Chargers when it opens in 2020. He and his family already have seven season tickets for the new dream facility.

“It’s a dream come true to be a union electrician working on our new stadium,” Salazar said.

But with opposing teams taking over Charger games week after week, many are wondering if the team will be able to hold their own when the team gets into the new football palace. Salazar says yes.

“There’s plenty of fans that invade the Coliseum, but because that’s a larger stadium, it doesn’t stand out as much,” he said.

He may be on to something. Believe it or not, the team has sold out all of their games the last two seasons, and the TV ratings are up 21 percent through November, with the Packers-Chargers contest giving CBS its highest week nine national rating in four years. Los Angeles Times columnist, Arash Markazi, has written extensively about the NFL’S return to L.A. He says the Chargers are growing fans through community outreach.

“The NFL wasn’t here for 21 years. That’s an entire generation they left behind,” Markazi said. “What the Chargers are trying to do – they’re going to school, they’re talking to kids. They’re trying to build the next generation of fans.”

Though to really get the L.A. buzzing, Markazi says they need to make a big free agent splash and simply get back to winning

“They have to be a fun product to watch on the field,” said Markazi.

Meanwhile, Salazar is optimistic about his team’s future.

“I truly believe the Chargers have every potential to take over the city of L.A.,” said Salazar.

He is ready for a new year, a new stadium, and too march into a new future with the Los Angeles Chargers.
