MADISON, Wis. — Two weeks have passed since the tragic school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School (ALCS). As time moves on and communities continue to mourn, ALCS and Dane County encourage people to continue giving.
On Monday, Dec. 16, a 15-year-old female student killed another teenage student and a teacher, police said. The student victim was identified as 14-year-old Rubi Patricia Vergara, a freshman at the school; the teacher was identified as 42-year-old Erin Michelle West, a sub coordinator and in-building substitute teacher. The shooter is also deceased.
Another six people were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from “minor” to “life-threatening,” police said.
After the shooting, United Way of Dane County established a fund for people to donate money to help those impacted by the shooting. All the donated funds go directly to ALCS for distribution.
“As of 2 p.m. today, we have raised $162,000 thanks to 1,138 donors. The fund remains open, and we encourage people to continue giving,” a United Way of Dane County spokesperson said.
The school said it plans to distribute the funds in three tiers. First, money will be given to support the financial needs of families who lost loved ones. Next, the school will give donated funds to help cover medical expenses of those injured. Remaining funds will go toward providing mental health support for the school community.
