STOUGHTON, Wis. — A 32-year-old Massachusetts man has been cited for a hit and run that damaged a monument outside Stoughton’s VFW Post 328, police said.
The City of Stoughton Police Department said it was able to find the driver of the semi-truck that crashed into the monument thanks to witnesses who brought information to police.
Police said witnesses took down the license plate number and captured information about the vehicle, which aided authorities in finding the 32-year-old driver.
Police did not name the driver or specify the details of the citation issued.
The 1960s-era T-33 jet now has a cracked wing, twisted metal and a nose planted in the ground. The jet was placed at the VFW post years ago, with help from the post and Wahlin’s late wife, after it was retired by the U.S. Air Force. The monument has since become a cherished symbol of service and sacrifice.
The post is now working with its insurance provider and The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force to explore repair options.
Police said the investigation has concluded.
