Planes, trains and automobiles... it is that lovely time of year when people hit the airways, the rails and the roads to visit family and friends.

What You Need To Know

  • Wednesday won't have big travel issues

  • Thanksgiving showers move across parts of the Midwest and Southern Plains

  • Air travel delays may be more common on Friday

  • Plan for varying temperatures, depending on your destination

AAA is estimating that 53.4 million Americans will be traveling this Thanksgiving. The highest volume of traffic will be Wednesday afternoon on what is considered the busiest travel day of the year.

Fortunately, the weather that day looks rather quiet for the contiguous United States. The Rocky Mountains may see some snow in higher elevations.

The upper Midwest through southern Texas may get some passing showers early Thanksgiving Day. Some heavier rain is possible from central Illinois to eastern Oklahoma.

Showers and thunderstorms move to the East Coast by Friday. Those waiting in the line for Black Friday deals from Upstate New York to the Carolinas may get wet from time to time.

As for air travel, most areas should not have to worry about major delays due to the weather. Dallas and Detroit could have some minor delays late Wednesday.

A line of showers and storms may cause some minor delays for the nation's midsection. Cities such as St. Louis and Nashville could see the greatest setbacks.

As a large weather system barrels towards the Northeast, delays could increase Friday from Detroit to JFK and LaGuardia airports. Atlanta may also have some issues.

For those deciding to take the roads, travel should not be a problem for Wisconsin residents statewide. Snow and ice will not be a factor this year. The only hazard could be a few light showers early Thanksgiving morning making the roads a little wet.

Temperatures will go from one extreme to the next in the Midwest. Make sure you pack accordingly. For those heading down south, temperatures will trend a little cooler than normal. For those heading west, high temperatures look to sit a little bit above average.
