Fall is fast approaching, and that means it’s mums season!

What You Need To Know

  • Fall officially begins on Sept. 23 for most of the U.S.

  • Mums are a colorful and hardy cool-season plant

  • The best time to plant mums is in the spring

Mums are a cool-season, inexpensive perennial that can add beautiful color to any home outdoor decor. They're a hardy plant that does well with cool temperatures and bloom in the fall.

They have a range of colors that includes bright yellow, orange, burgundy, white, pink and lavender. While technically a perennial, mums can be considered an annual, too.

If you hope to have your mums come back every year, the best time to plant is actually in the spring after the last frost. This allows them more time to grow and establish their roots deep into the soil.

Planting them in the fall will decrease the chances of surviving the long, cold winter due to a shallower root system. However, many people choose not to plant them but rather leave them in their pots as an annual.

The best time to purchase mums is in September. They require a decent amount of sunlight and should get three to six hours of direct sunlight a day.

Don’t forget to water your plants at least a couple of times a week. Enjoy the bright, beautiful mums and the fall season... winter will be here before we know it!
