MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin cancer survivors and caregivers were gifted new bicycles from Associated Bank on Tuesday night.
The donation of six out of 25 bikes was part of the inaugural Medical College of Wisconsin Audaxity Bike Ride, an event to raise money for cancer research.
It is something cancer survivor Jameelah Mahmoud said she’s grateful to be part of.
“Doing more community advocacy and raising awareness on all cancers,” said Mahmoud.
Breast cancer survivor Monique Morris also received a bike.
“I think it’s a great effort to raise funding for critical research for cancer treatment,” said Morris.
Dr. Gustavo Leone is the director of the Medical College Cancer Center. Leone said there’s more than 250 clinical trials going on. That’s why, he said, funding for research is critical.
“We have two goals,” said Leone. “One, is to raise wheelbarrows of money so we can do the research necessary to cure cancer. The second goal is to engage the community to be part of the solution.”
It’s bringing hope to caregivers, including Jen Murray.
“It feels like a true gift. Cancer has really transformed our lives,” said Murray. “Being in the middle of treatment, it’s been critical to have something that gives us purpose and fuel us and help our community.”
Murry said fundraisers like this can make a huge difference.
“I just can’t believe I’m on the other side of cancer, so many of us don’t make it,” said Mahmoud. “Just to be in survivor mode.”
The event will not only create awareness but will also raise money for new trials, treatments and better outcomes for patients and their loved ones.
The Audaxity Bike Ride is set for Aug. 17 at American Family Field. There are 5-, 25-, 50- and 100-mile routes that people can participate in.
