CLEVELAND — It’s a day Clevelanders look forward to every year: the Guardians home opener.

This year, the team will open the home season at Progressive Field against the Chicago White Sox at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday.

With any opening day comes a lot of excitement, and a lot of traffic, so the Cleveland Division of Police is warning attendees of road restrictions and other traffic-related information they may need to make the day go smoothly.

Road closures

Police are warning drivers to expect heavy traffic in the downtown area. To help ease the traffic, police officers will be along key routes directing drivers around the area.

Several roads may also be temporarily closed or restricted as needed around the stadium. Road closures could change throughout the evening, based on circumstances deemed necessary by the police. Go slow, be patient and watch for traffic changes, police warned.

Parking restrictions

Parking garages and lots could fill up quickly, so police are urging people to use the Greater Cleveland RTA as much as possible, or use other ride-share options, like Uber or Lyft. There will be parking restrictions in place starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday and will continue through midnight.

The following streets will have parking restrictions:

  • East 9th Street: Euclid to Bolivar
  • Huron Road: From Prospect to Ontario
  • East 2nd Street: High to Prospect
  • Prospect Avenue: Ontario to East 9th Street, and East 9th to East 14th Street
  • Bolivar Road: East 9th to Prospect
  • Bolivar Road: East 9th to East 7th Street
  • Huron Road: East 9th to Ontario
  • Sumner Street: East 14th to East 9th
  • Erie Court: East 14th to East 9th

The Cleveland Division of Police said all information is subject to change based on real-time traffic and pedestrian conditions.

"As always, your safety is a priority, and we ask all attendees to exercise caution and stay aware of their surroundings," Cleveland Division of Police wrote in a news release. "If you see something suspicious, please say something."
