WISCONSIN — Lillian Asala, the 13-year-old Oak Creek teen who had been missing since Saturday, March 1, was found safe on March 7, according to Oak Creek Police.
Her mother is now being charged in the case and made a court appearance March 12.
Luisa Asala has been charged with interfering with child custody-other parent. The felony charge carries a fine of up to $25,000 and/or prison time of up to 12 years and 6 months. A preliminary hearing is set for March 20.
According to a criminal complaint, Lillian Asala told her grandparents she was going to a nearby park on March 1. When her grandparents could not get ahold of her, her father contacted her but her phone went straight to voicemail. Her father has primary physical placement of her. Her mother said her father is not physically abusive.
Police confirmed that the missing teen was not at her mother’s residence that day, per the complaint. Officials searched local parks but did not locate Lillian Asala. There was no sign of her on the park’s security cameras, either.
Police received an anonymous tip that other students at Oak Creek East Middle School were saying Lillian Asala was fine and her mom was hiding her. It is unclear how that rumor started.
When questioned, Luisa Asala told police she did not know where her daughter was and cited her daughter had talked about running away. Lillian Asala’s best friend told police she received a text from her, saying “Summer, I can’t do this anymore my dad just stresses me out, I love you sm but I think it is time to run away I don’t know where but somewhere.”
Luisa Asala’s manager told police that Luisa Asala was exhibiting "concerning behavior.” She was did not appear upset that her daughter was missing, but instead was upset that people were looking for her, per the complaint.
On March 7, Luisa Asala told police she knew that her daughter was with a friend, alleging that the friend did not know Lillian Asala had run away. She was then placed under arrest, per the complaint.
Luisa Asala told police she drove her daughter to the friend’s residence, and they were instructed that the teen should not have access to social media or her phone. Police found the teenager at that residence, wearing the same clothes she had on the day she went missing.
