TEXAS — According to the National Weather Service (NWS), much of Texas can expect winter weather on Monday, with a Winter Storm Warning issued for Monday night through Tuesday along the I-35 corridor and eastward.
The NWS also advises delaying travel Monday night through Tuesday.
According to Spectrum News 1 meteorologist Dan Roberts, an Arctic airmass is in place across Texas and very cold temperatures are expected for Monday morning.
This week, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said it expects the state’s power grid will hold up through freezing temperatures. Anyone who was in Texas during the winter storm of February 2021 remembers when it didn’t. Millions of Texans lost power when it was needed most, leading to 246 deaths.
The American Red Cross on Jan. 3 provided tips for Texans to get through potentially life-threatening weather.
Protect yourself, loved ones and pets
- Wear layers, including a hat, gloves and waterproof, insulated boots
- Prepare an emergency kit that includes first aid items, batteries, a flashlight, portable radio, candles, water and a non-electric can opener
- Watch out for symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite symptoms include numbness, flushed gray, white, blue or yellow skin, and waxy skin. Symptoms of hypothermia include confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and extreme shivering. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms
- Check on your neighbors, especially older adults, people with disabilities and children
- If possible, bring your pets inside
Protect your home
- If you use a space heater, place it on a hard, non-flammable surface. Give it space and keep children, pets, drapes and anything flammable at least 3 feet away
- Never leave a fireplace unattended
- Never use a cooking range or stove to heat your home
- Turn off portable heaters when you leave a room or go to sleep
- Open cabinet doors to circulate warmer air around plumbing
- Let cold water drip from faucets at a trickle. This will decrease the likelihood of your pipes freezing
- Don’t set your thermostat below 55 degrees
- Caulk and weather-strip doors and windowsills to keep cold air out
- Test your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors
- If you have a chimney, get it inspected and cleaned
- Cover outdoor faucets and exposed pipes.
