WISCONSIN — Thanksgiving weekend was record-breaking for the movie industry and a new round of movies will hit the box office just in time for holiday break.

What You Need To Know

  • New releases for the upcoming holiday will include more drama flicks and Oscar contenders
  • People are coming back to the theatre after the pandemic and the Hollywood strikes, according to The Marcus Corporation
  • Marcus Theatres delivered record earnings in the third quarter this year

  • “Moana 2” brought in a tidal wave of moviegoers over the Thanksgiving Day weekend, setting records with $221 million in ticket sales

Greg Marcus, CEO of The Marcus Corporation, said this new wave will include more drama flicks and Oscar contenders. There’s also a new incentive, called the Marcus Movie Club, to get people to the theatre.

“We’re trying to reward our frequent customers and to incentivize people to come more frequently,” Marcus said.

The Marcus Movie Club offers one movie ticket a month for just under $10. Moviegoers can also buy tickets for family and friends at that price.

“We’ll have screenings along the way; we’ll be doing stuff for people that are members of the club,” Marcus added.

Marcus pointed out the recent challenges in the industry with the pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes, but said people are coming back.

“There are two things I know: human beings want to be together ... you want to cry with other people, laugh with them and be scared,” Marcus said. “That’s our nature. And also, you know we’re a business about memories. When you leave, all you have is your memory.”
