WISCONSIN — Video games are an easy, last-minute gift for the holidays. A new report by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) found they’re the number one requested gift by kids right now.
But before you purchase, it’s important to know what games are best for that age group.
Aubrey Quinn, senior vice president of ESA said when they asked kids ages 10 through 17 what they wanted for the holidays, 76% said something video game-related.
“It comes out ahead of cash and gift cards, clothes and accessories, even other forms of electronics like smartwatches or smartphones,” Quinn said.
That statistic includes girls and boys. The report showed 67% of girls are now asking for video game gifts, making it what Quinn calls a “gender-neutral hobby.”
To keep kids safe when it comes to video games, Quinn pointed out it’s important for parents to take note of age ratings on games. For the past 30 years, according to Quinn, those ratings have been assigned by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).
"Just like you can look at movie ratings and know what's acceptable and appropriate for the kids in your family, you can look at those age ratings," Quinn explained.
The ESRB also provides an explanation as to why the game received its rating and whether it has interactive elements.
