DANE COUNTY, Wis. — On Monday, Sept. 9, officials publicly identified the inmate who died at the Dane County Jail on Aug. 26.
The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office said the inmate's name was Valerie A. Cuccia. Cuccia was 46-years-old and lived in Madison, Wis. According to court documents, Cuccia faced charges of retail theft, theft of movable property and bail jumping.
Dane County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) deputies and jail medical staff responded to the intake housing unit in the public safety building portion of the Dane County Jail at about 1 a.m. the morning of Aug. 26, when Cuccia was found unresponsive.
DCSO said deputies and jail medical staff tried life-saving measures; Madison Fire Department’s paramedics took over medical care upon arrival. Despite these attempts, Cuccia was pronounced dead at the scene.
The medical examiner's office said a forensic autopsy was completed Aug. 27, but as of Sept. 9, the cause and manner of death was still pending. The medical examiner's office said additional testing is currently underway.
Cuccia's death remains under investigation by both the DCSO and the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.
