GREEN BAY, Wis. — An elated Tony Wied greeted his supporters around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday with high fives and hugs after fellow Republican Roger Roth conceded the primary election.

  • He defeated Republicans Roger Roth and Andre Jacques

  • Wied said work ahead includes uniting the Republican Party

“I’m going to go to Washington and actually solve problems and take a pragmatic approach and truly do what is right for the people of District 8,” Wied said.

Wied defeated Republican opponents Roger Roth and Andre Jacques in Tuesday’s primary election.

Wied is a Trump-backed candidate, which is something that factored heavily into his campaign.

“Having the endorsement of President Trump is an honor of a lifetime. We need President Trump in office here in November,” Wied said. “Are we better off now than we were four years ago? The answer is a resounding no. Just look at the economic mess we’re in. The inflation we’re dealing with. The crisis at the border.”

Part of Wied’s night was what he described as a short and succinct congratulatory call from former president Donald Trump.

After months of work, both Wied’s campaign team, and his family said they were confident heading into the hours of limbo as election results came in.

One of Wied’s sons, Simon, said he knew this would be the outcome.

“We’re just going to get right back to work, just keep working,” he said. “Calling people, and getting support, and throwing out signs. We’ve got to unite as a party now.”

That’s a point his dad also stressed.

“I think it’s important now, more than ever, to unite as a Republican party,” Wied said. “I’m going to do everything in my power to bring the Republican Party together. We need change in Washington on November 5th.”

He said it’s work that starts now.

“We’re going to start preparing for the general election,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the general election.”

Wied will face Democrat Dr. Kristin Lyerly in the 8th Congressional District race in November.
