TEXAS — Preteen suicide in preteen has been increasing by 8% since 2008, according to a recent study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Preteen ages are considered 8-12.
These findings are most prevalent in girls who were American Indian/Alaska Native or Asian/Pacific Islander and Hispanic. Although, Black preteens had an overall higher suicide rate, according to NIH.
While the preteen age range has a smaller suicide rate compared to teens and adults, researchers believe this calls for improved prevention efforts that include suicide risk screening and lethal means safety counseling.
Researchers found the most common suicide tactic was hanging and suffocation, but firearms is rapidly emerging as a more dominant method.
If you or someone you know is struggling with ideations of suicide, you are encouraged to call 988 or head to the National Crisis Lifeline.
