WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. — A World War II veteran, a father of eleven children, and husband to Rosemary for 76 years, 98-year-old Sergeant William “Bill” Pekrul remains steadfast in his love for his country.

“You’ve got to fight for freedom,” said Pekrul. “I would go back into service as old as I am. I don’t look that old, and I still got good health. I could do it.”

Enlisting the day after his 18th birthday in Dec. 1943, Pekrul’s wartime experiences span the Invasion of Normandy or “D-Day” and the Battle of the Bulge.

“Once in a while, I do get nightmares,” said Pekrul. “I’ve seen a lot of European countries — France, Belgium, Holland, Germany — and they’re nothing like a good old USA.”

Among his numerous honors are the Meritorious Award from the French government and the Bronze Star for valor.

“When I came back home, boy I kissed the ground,” said Pekrul. “I was so happy to be home.”

His recent speech at the Republican National Convention earned him a standing ovation and a flood of supportive messages.

“I’m not a party guy,” said Pekrul. “I vote for the person and Trump is a very strong man. And I got a lot of faith in him that he will take care of our country.”

True to his patriotic form, Pekrul said he enjoys sitting by his window—with the American flag in view —reflecting on a life that just added another chapter to a fascinating story.
