WASHINGTON – The Trump-endorsed candidate in the race for Wisconsin’s eighth congressional district raised nearly one million dollars in his first fundraising quarter.
Republican Tony Wied raised more than $919,000 across his fundraising committees in the second quarter of the year, his campaign told Spectrum News Wednesday. He entered the race in April.
“We are beyond thankful for all the support our army of grassroots donors showed us this quarter,” Wied said in a statement. “Wisconsin voters are done with career politicians and want to send a Trump-endorsed outsider to Washington. I look forward to continuing to earn the support of WI-08 voters and winning this primary on August 13th.”
Wied faces two other Republicans in the Aug. 13 primary: Former state Sen. Roger Roth and Sen. André Jacque of De Pere.
The Democratic candidate for WI-08 is OBGYN Kristin Lyerly.
They’re all running to fill the seat Mike Gallagher left vacant in April.
There will be a special election on the same dates as the normal primary and general elections, in August and November, respectively, due to the timing of Gallagher’s departure from Congress. The special election winner will serve from early November through Jan. 3. The general election winner will serve a two-year term, beginning Jan. 3.
Each election could be won by different candidates, but the most likely scenario is the same candidate winning both. A Republican is expected to win the seat.
In his first campaign ad released Tuesday, Wied said he’ll secure the southern border and lower prices.
