A handful of people are renting out their homes to convention visitors. These temporary rentals can come at a hefty price.

Nathan Scherper owns the historic Albert Zinn House on the city’s Upper East Side neighborhood. Scherper said he hopes to rent out his entire home where his family currently lives.

“It’s been a good neighborhood that we thought was going to be desirable to renters,” said Scherper. “Right close to the Downer Avenue strip, so you’re close to bars, restaurants, grocery store, pharmacy and Milwaukee Art Museum, beach and Lake Park.”

Through Powers Realty Group, Scherper initially listed the property for $30,000 for the week of the convention. He has now lowered the price to $14,000, or $2,000 a night.

While it’s still a hefty sum, Scherper said compared to other rentals during the event, it’s a steal.

“There’s a couple homes along the lake that I know are $50,000 for the week, yeah,” said Scherper.

Scherper said he is still looking for takers for his four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath house. He said he has high hopes that days before the RNC starts, it will get rented out.

“Sometimes, there’s these last-minute people that come in, especially if it’s a governor, senator, delegate or somebody that’s coming in kinda last second, sometimes that’s something that will come about and they’re looking for a nice place to stay, so there’s still a couple days left where we might have a renter,” said Scherper.
