WISCONSIN — Wisconsin Hero Outdoors, or WHO, is focused on suicide prevention for veterans and first responders through a variety of free outdoor activities. It’s a vital resource for many in Wisconsin communities.

What You Need To Know

  • Wisconsin Hero Outdoors helps veterans and first responders heal from the stresses of service

  • The organization offers free outdoor activities which also extends to family members

  • WHO works with the Veterans Affairs Medical System in Milwaukee, Madison, Tomah and north Chicago
  • Group outings include fishing, hunting, golf, SCUBA diving and more

If there’s an activity people are interested in, WHO can fulfill that wish.

“We take them fishing, hiking, snowshoeing. There are a variety of outdoor activities that we offer. We’re kind of like a mini-Cabela’s … we have all the equipment; all they have to do is let us know what they’re interested in,” President Tammy Sawyer said.

Sawyer pointed out the experience can be life-changing for some individuals dealing with the mental health challenges that come with the stresses of service. The experience is also open to family members.

This year, WHO benefited from the Ride for Veterans. The organization was chosen as the ride’s main benefactor; all money raised will help WHO continue its mission of providing free outdoor activities around the state.
