WISCONSIN — The Mount Horeb School District was closed for a second day Friday after police shot and killed an armed student outside the middle school Wednesday morning.

What You Need To Know

  • Mount Horeb School District was closed for a second day Friday after police killed an armed student earlier this week

  • Talking to your child about what happened should include appropriate language for their age

  • Ask how you can best support them as they process any anxiety or trauma

  • Experts say in general a daily check in is always a good idea to see if there’s anything your child needs help processing

The community and district have organized gatherings and pulled together resources for students and families to help people process the trauma. Classes are scheduled to resume Monday.

Many parents are now looking for ways to talk to their children about what happened.

Teresa Buss is a clinical therapist supervisor with Rawhide Youth Services. She said in general, a daily check in with children is a good habit to develop.

“I think a lot of kids are carrying too much and could just use the space to kind of process a lot of different things,” Buss shared.

How parents approach talking about the Mount Horeb active shooter situation, Buss said, depends on your child.

“You know your child best. You know how to communicate to your child and in that space just kind of using language that would feel appropriate to that,” Buss said.
