GREEN BAY, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women’s basketball team is in the NCAA tournament for the first time in six years.
UW-Green Bay junior guard, Cassie Schiltz, said she watched the Phoenix as a young girl.
While growing up, she said she always wanted to play for the Green and White.
Schiltz got that opportunity after graduating high school and took it.
“My parents and my sister are here all the time,” said Schiltz. “For them to be able to come watch me when they can, it means the world to me that I get to live out my dream here with them too.”
UW-Green Bay won the Horizon League tournament. During that time, Schiltz scored her career 1,000th point as a Phoenix player.
“It means a lot. Obviously, getting 1,000 points in high school was way different than getting it in college,” said Schiltz. “To get it in college was just it was a great accomplishment. Credit to my teammates for helping me get that too. And my coaches for helping me grow my game.”
Schiltz said it warms her heart to see young girls in the stands because it reminds her of herself at that age.
“I think it’s really cool that women’s basketball is finally getting recognition,” said Schiltz. “I think Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Judea [JuJu] Watkins and everyone like that, is really helping grow the game of women’s basketball,” she said.
UW-Green Bay will take on the University of Tennessee in Raleigh, North Carolina, on March 24, at 11 a.m. The winner will play the victor of NC State and Chattanooga game in round two.
