WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. — The road to the White House goes through Wisconsin. The Badger State is one of several crucial swing states that is likely to decide the next president of the United States.
It’s one of several reasons first lady Dr. Jill Biden visited Wisconsin on Sunday.
The first lady recently launched a campaign tour, called Women for Biden-Harris, to mobilize women voters across the country as an effort to re-elect President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Voters packed the 4-H building at the Waukesha County Expo Center as they waited for her arrival.
One topic of importance among attendees was women’s reproductive rights. Some voters said they are afraid former President Donald Trump would take those rights away if elected.
“President Biden is defending reproductive rights, fighting for a national law that would restore Roe’s protection and yes, that means protecting IVF and access to contraceptives,” said Jill Biden.
Ellen Holly, a voter from Walworth County, said it’s crucial for President Biden to be re-elected not only for her rights, but for her granddaughter’s.
“I have a 2-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter that I want to have the same rights I did when I was in high school and in college and adulthood and I’m very concerned she may not,” said Holly.
Mike Van Someren said he is also concerned for his two daughters’ future. He felt it was important to bring them to the event.
“Women for Biden and they will be women one day,” said Van Someren. “I want them to see the things that they can do as they grow up. That there is no limit to what they can do just because they’re young women.”
Jill Biden said it’s important to keep the message going, especially in counties like Waukesha that tend to lean more Republican.
