MILWAUKEE — Steve Bielk knows a thing or two about gardening. He began transforming his backyard into a peaceful oasis nearly 40 years ago.
“Due to stress and working 70 hours a week, I decided to dig holes and build a garden,” said Bielk.
His backyard is known as the Sanger House Gardens in Brewer’s Hill; thousands come through each year to visit.
He said he enjoys sharing his knowledge with visitors and reminded people to be cautious of the warm weather Wisconsin has had recently.
“It’s very tempting to be doing things you shouldn’t be doing,” said Bielk. “The ground is not frozen anymore. We didn’t have a heavy frost this year. So don’t start trying to put in plants or your seeds out because it’s too early. The soil temperature isn’t warm enough yet.”
He encouraged other gardeners to focus on maintenance work so gardens are ready to go this spring for planting.
“If you’ve got clippers, take time and clean your clippers and sharpen them,” said Bielk. “Take a look at your tools. Take a look at your wheelbarrow. Check your hoses. Nows the time to prep yourself so you’re not running over to the department store, Home Depot store, so you’re not rushing over to buy things. Plan ahead.”
Over in the Riverwest neighborhood, Kellner Greenhouses has been busy with customers. Owner Casey Dembowiak said this weather has people excited for spring.
“When it was nice and beautiful out Sunday we had twice as many people in here,” said Dembowiak. “You can tell people are itching to get out. The weather, the sun, the environment people just want to get out of the house.”
Both recommend planting closer to Memorial Day. In the meantime, patience is key.
“Everything I’m saying I’ve made mistakes on,” said Bielk. “You learn through your own mistakes. There’s no book you can pick up that’s going to tell you exactly how to do it. You have to experience it yourself.”
