FITCHBURG, Wis. – As drivers dealt with icy roads Wednesday, volunteers for Meals on Wheels stayed on schedule.

What You Need To Know

  • Meals on Wheels serves dozens of Fitchburg seniors through the Fitchburg Senior Center

  • The program only shuts down if the Oregon School District is closed

  • Extreme winter weather can further isolate seniors, so checking in on them can be vital

Paul Pitas is a volunteer for Meals on Wheels,  housed at the Fitchburg Senior Center. On Wednesday, he had seven deliveries to make.

“I’m not driving the speed limit; I’m driving under the speed limit because it’s so icy,” Pitas said.

Most of the seniors who got meals said they haven’t left the house since the snowstorm last week. Pitas said for populations who are already isolated, extreme winter weather can isolate them even further.

“It’s more than just delivering meals, I’m looking for some things,” Pitas said. “I look for bruises on the face, or if I can see unopened mail or excessive clutter, things like that. I would go back and tell the social worker about it.”

Meals on Wheels said it could always use more volunteers. To learn more, click here.
