MILWAUKEE — Hundreds of people braved the cold waters of Lake Michigan for the annual Polar Bear Plunge at Bradford Beach on New Year’s Day.

Christopher Uselding said it’s always more fun to take on the challenge with friends by his side. 

“There’s no better way to shake off a good old hangover,” laughed Uselding. 

Others, like Andy Bologovsky, experienced the Polar Bear Plunge for the first time in 2024.

“I’m actually a new resident of Milwaukee,” said Bologovsky. “I heard about this and thought I’d check it out and get wet.” 

Dan Brelle said it was a perfect way to start the new year fresh.

“It’s great,” said Brelle. “I think it’s a baptism to the new year.”

After the plunge, many celebrated with the first party of 2024. 

“This is the most Wisconsin thing I’ve ever seen,” said Uselding. “A bunch of hungover people jumping in the cold water and grilling out after.”

For so many in the Milwaukee area, the Polar Bear Plunge at Bradford Beach is a beloved tradition, and a unique way to start the new year off right.
