MILWAUKEE — The Salvation Army hosted its 34th annual Christmas Feast on Christmas Day.
Major Beverly Gates is the Salvation Army Milwaukee area commander.
From 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m., she and her team provided meals to 4,000 Milwaukee residents.
“This event is for anyone who wants to come out and enjoy a hearty meal,” said Gates. “We are anticipating a huge group to come out today and it’s a day where people can come for food and fellowship.”
Marie Hollins attends the Christmas Feast every year and this year she arrived at 6 a.m. to get in the front of the line.
“You have to get here early because if you look around, you have a lot of people out here enjoying this Christmas dinner,” said Hollins.
After five hours of waiting, Hollins was able to head inside and get a warm meal.
“You know what? I didn’t even get anything for Christmas but it’s ok because I’m going to get a good meal,” said Hollins. “I’m going to have a beautiful full belly, and I am going to enjoy this wonderful day. ”
Before Hollins could get a warm meal, hundreds of volunteers had to work to get them ready.
Kneauka Windhom said she and her partner weren’t feeling the Christmas spirit, so they decided to volunteer.
“For people who don’t have the opportunity, the means and the resources in this dang economy right now to be able to afford gifts or just food and so it’s a blessing,” said Windhom.
Windhom wouldn’t wish to be anywhere else during Christmas.
“It is wonderful to be able to give on Christmas because that is what it’s about,” said Windhom.
