The gymnasium at Rufus King High School pulsated with beats as hundreds of students poured their energy into the competition this year. During the event, each group showcased drumming skills, synchronization, stick tricks, marching precision and even some dance moves to accompany their beats.

Yiye McVester, a junior at Rufus King High School, immigrated from Ghana and joined the band last year. This is his first year competing with the varsity team.

“I’d say music is life; in general it just makes me… me,” said McVester.

For the past two decades, Rufus King has dominated the competition, taking home the championship 15 times.

It’s something that Elijah Witkowski, a tenor player, said early in the day he was hopeful to do again.

“So far every year I’ve been here we won and I’m going to hope we can win again,” said Witkowski.

Rob Larry served as emcee for the Battle of the Drumline. Larry is a radio host on Milwaukee NPR Station WUWM. Larry is a Rufus King alumnus and former contender in the drumline battle.

“Well, it’s certainly a full circle moment, to say the least,” said Larry.

For Larry, the event isn’t just about drumming; it’s a showcase on life lessons and the hard work that goes into crafting a routine.

“It’s really exciting because I know how valuable these moments are, and I know how much work goes into making a routine and being competitive and being successful in this space,” said Larry.

While members of Rufus King High School said they were happy to bring home another successful win this year, making 16 wins total, it’s being a team player that really counts.

“We build that culture of togetherness, especially in drumline,” said McVester.
