GREEN BAY, Wis. — Brushing up on CPR skills was one of the errands on Wayne Mohr’s list of things to do Wednesday.
The Green Bay resident stopped by Lambeau Field where the Packers and Bellin Health were offering free drop-in hands-only CPR training.
“I think everybody who has been around for a while knows stories of somebody who has just dropped over from having a cardiac event,” Mohr said.
Mohr is a retired physician. He wanted to make sure his skills were up to date.
“As a physician you’re required to know CPR, but I wasn’t familiar with the AED, the defibrillator,” he said. “I think it’s a good idea for all of us to understand the basics of it because you can obviously save somebody’s life.”
While the training focused on CPR, some people like Mohr were also shown how to use an AED.
Dillon Hock was one of the Bellin employees providing training. He said the sudden nature of cardiac events drew national attention earlier this year when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field.
“Millions of people watch football every Sunday and every Monday, so it really put it on the world stage of, ‘OK, this is a real thing that could happen,’” Hock said. “I think it’s been a big push to really get more people trained and more people aware.”
One of the goals of the training was getting people comfortable administering CPR and using an AED.
“You never know who it could be. It could be a significant other, a spouse, a parent or even a child that goes down,” Hock said. “If you’re prepared to help, you can hopefully save their life.”
Mohr’s training took less than 10 minutes.
“It doesn’t take long, and you can learn how to help somebody,” he said.
