MILWAUKEE — With the new school year right around the corner, various school districts throughout Wisconsin are welcoming new administrators to new roles.
In Green Bay, that means welcoming a new superintendent to the state itself, as Dr. Claude Tiller, Jr. has moved to Wisconsin, following his previous role with Detroit Public Schools.
Prompting him to apply for the position? The passage this past November of a $92.6 million capital referendum to improve schools throughout the Green Bay Area Public School District.
"It showed me that the community was very interested and loved their district enough to make sure they had the proper financial funds in order to make sure the district moved forward," said Dr. Tiller, Jr. "I always wanted to be in line with a school district and a community, the students, the families, the stakeholders that were a part of and believed in their school system."
While the school board now moves forward with a series of plans to upgrade facilities and put that working capital to good use, including with a planned meeting Monday night, Dr. Tiller, Jr. said he plans to work with families throughout the district to make sure they're all working together going forward.
"I'm a grassroots type of a superintendent— I believe in getting out into the community," Dr. Tiller, Jr. said, highlighting what he calls his 'Talking with Tiller' community events. "I want them to see me as a person and not someone who sits in an office seat like Zeus throwing lightning bolts from up high on Mount Olympus."
