WISCONSIN — The national political spotlight is once again on Wisconsin. This time it’s for the state Supreme Court race, which has been the most expensive in history.
The Associated Press reported spending topped $42 million. That’s almost triple the previous national record for a court race.
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse political science professor Anthony Chergosky shared his insight when it comes to the state’s spring election.
“It’s no accident that many people view this as the most important election anywhere in the country in all of 2023,” he said.
The candidate who becomes the next justice will determine the majority control of the court. Abortion, voting rights and the 2024 presidential election are all at stake.
Chergosky noted last minute money coming into this race is flowing to the conservative side, or Republican-backed candidate Dan Kelly. Chergosky said Kelly has received key spending from outside groups which gave his campaign a strong boost.
According to Chergosky, the Wisconsin Democratic Party has given a lot of money to help Kelly’s challenger, Janet Protasiewicz.
“Both candidates have had the money to run a credible campaign, though the money advantage has been on the Protasiewicz side,” he said.
Chergosky said whether that’s enough to make a difference will have to be determined post-election.
The winner replaces retiring conservative Justice Pat Roggensack and will serve a 10-year term.
