MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee-based content creator is using his platform to help others. He goes by the nickname JMatt online.
JMatt has multiple social media platforms. You might have recognized him on Instagram or TikTok by the handle, JMattMKE.
He said one page that’s near to his heart is JMattADHD on Instagram.
“Trying to break the stigma around mental health that prevents so many people from asking for help,” said JMatt about the purpose behind the page.
All throughout his feed, you’ll notice the majority of posts are of him doing pushups.
“It originated as a challenge where you do 22 pushups a day for 22 days for the time 22 veterans who died by suicide each day,” said JMatt.
More than six years later, he hasn’t stopped.
“I am somebody who struggles with my own mental health and mental health conditions,” said JMatt. “I’ve been diagnosed with several and one of them is depression. For me, when it’s really bad, it leads to suicide idealization.”
By doing 22 pushups every day and posting it to social media, JMatt said it’s helped him feel comfortable talking about his own mental health.
“There’s a lot of power in that and there was a lot of therapeutic help that it provided me,” said JMatt.
The challenge not only helps him but also those who view his videos. He also keeps a coin in his pocket that has a helpline for veterans struggling with their mental health.
“I have about 10 coins at home and only four left,” said JMatt.
