MILWAUKEE — Kyra Nowacki is a new, first time mom. Her son, Walter, is just three months old.

What You Need To Know

  • During a game against the L.A. Clippers in February, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 54 points for the Milwaukee Bucks

  • In a viral video, he said he'd celebrate by eating 54 cheeseburgers from Culver's

  • Culver's then donated 54,000 diapers to the Milwaukee Diaper Mission

  • On Friday, Milwaukee Diaper Mission, Culver's and Hayat Pharmacy teamed up to distribute 25,000 diapers, infant formula and more

She lives in New Berlin, and just recently moved back from Colorado.

As a single mom, she knows the struggles when it comes to the high cost of pretty much any necessity.

“Just like, a bottle of formula is like, almost $30,” Nowacki said. “[It’s] almost two hours of work. That’s kind of ridiculous.”

When she saw the announcement early Friday morning that the Milwaukee Diaper Mission, Hayat Pharmacy and Culver’s were teaming up to start distributing about 25,000 diapers, formula and wipes, she made her way into the city.

“Honestly, even just a pack of 10 diapers, because he uses about 10 a day, anything helps, especially when you’re a single mom,” Nowacki said.

She was one of hundreds who showed up to the diaper giveaway — which had cars wrapped around multiple blocks off of North Avenue.

Meagan Johnson, the founder of the Milwaukee Diaper Mission, was happy to see so many people turn out.

“It’s an incredible feeling to know that we’re supporting so many families with the supplies that they need for their child to be happy and healthy,” Johnson said. “We launched during the pandemic as Milwaukee’s first and only basic needs bank, so that means it’s our mission to provide these products to families in need.”

Johnson said that the need for basic necessities continues to rise.

“We know the cost of diapers continues to rise, we know the cost of formula continues to rise, and so any little bit we can do to help families is what we do.”

With the help of Hayat Pharmacy — which donated formula and face masks — and Culver’s who donated 54,000 diapers because of a recent Milwaukee Bucks’ game where Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 54 points, many families will feel a little of relief when it comes to spending.

To help even more families, Dr. Hashim Zaibak, the founder of Hayat Pharmacy, has a message for Giannis Antetokounmpo

“I hope he scores 100 points so we get more diapers next time,” Zaibak said.

No matter the number of diapers, moms like Nowacki and other families with children are happy to get some help.

“At the end of the day, people in Wisconsin really look out for each other,” Nowacki said. “We really care about one another.”
