MILWAUKEE — Chantell Jewell is the first Black woman to ever lead the Community Reintegration Center in Milwaukee County as Superintendent.

She was hired in Nov. 2020, in the height of the pandemic. She wasted no time making positive impacts.

Already, she has secured a grant to open a family engagement center, providing resources to teach financial wellness and education, and even made a name change.

“The House of Correction doesn’t signal who we are at all; it does not align with our mission or vision. The Community Reintegration Center much better describes what we are about here and the work that we are doing in the community and working with the community,” said Jewell.

A Milwaukee native, Jewell brought nearly 30 years of experience to her role as head of CRC. For 20 years, Jewell served in various positions within the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, including roles as a youth counselor, parole agent and field supervisor.

During her tenure at DOC, Jewell co-chaired the Regional Diversity Committee to improve organizational culture, educate staff on implicit bias and review hiring practices to increase staff diversity.

“Making sure people leave here in a better space than when they got here and really, that is how we are going to achieve public safety,” said Jewell.
