MILWAUKEE — Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in Wisconsin, according to the Department of Health Services.

That’s why one bar is offering an alternative.

Whether you’re on a journey away from alcohol or you just want to try something new, Honeybee Sage Wellness and Apothecary is the city’s first alcohol-free cocktail bar. It’s already making an impact in Milwaukee’s Bronzeville neighborhood.

“There are tons of healthy benefits that come from engaging alternative practices or having something to balance,” said owner Angela Mallett.

At Honeybee Sage, you’ll find a variety of alcohol-free cocktails. It also specializes in natural health products like herbs and herbal teas.

“Not only do we offer herbal tea that is medicinal, but we also just support and promote a balanced lifestyle and one that allows us to slow down a little bit and reduce stress,” said Mallett. “We know can be the trigger for so many different diseases and even the trigger for alcoholism.”

Mallet said she decided to offer this to the community after watching her father battle and pass away from alcoholism.

“This is part of my dad’s legacy,” said Mallett. “My dad passed about 4 months after I opened the first Honeybee Sage and he died of alcohol-related organ failure.”

She said this is a space for people who are recovering, those who simply choose not to drink or for people who just want to add balance to their lifestyle.

“I did not want to introduce alcohol into a space where we offer healing alternatives and medicine,” she said.

The drinks are made with fresh fruit, natural sweeteners and alcohol-free spirits. They discourage the use of processed sugars, opting to use ingredients like honey, maple and agave.

Mallet said there’s already been a diverse group of people who frequent the cafe and are thankful for the space.

“When you walk in the door, everything else is kind of an addition to the vibe and the love that we want to make sure is felt,” she said.
