MILWAUKEE — The CDC shows that economic and social conditions are usually barriers in communities of color when it comes to overall health and wellness.

One business owner in Milwaukee’s Bronzeville community is hoping to change that.

Shakkiah Curtis is the owner of Spinn MKE is a lifestyle fitness brand powered by culture, community, and passion for creating holistic awareness.

Curtis opened for cycling classes in July 2022.

“It was a birthday gift to myself,” she said.

As a Milwaukee native, she says she wanted to create a space that reflected people who look like her In her community. While doing research, she noticed there weren’t many places to explore fitness in her own community on Milwaukee’s north side.

“The only gyms that we have in our communities of color are Planet Fitness, and that’s in Midtown,” said Curtis. “We don’t really have another gym that sits inside of the city.”

Curtis said these classes were created for communities who lack access to luxurious fitness spaces that are affordable and accessible.

“We are on average, less than half of the indoor cycle studios in Wisconsin,” said Curtis.

The classes are centered on hip-hop music and bring a vibrant and upbeat energy to its participants.

Curtis said there are other woman-owned spin classes in Milwaukee, but none that were woman and minority-owned.

“That just blew my mind,” she said. “It’s 2022 and we don’t have these spaces owned by people of color.”

She says she’s proud of the work she’s doing and is happy that the community is enjoying the classes.

“I’m proud of Milwaukee,” said Curtis. “I’m proud of Bronzeville and the community for not just accepting us but being willing to give us a chance.”

She’s confident that these classes are making a difference and hopes it inspires others.

“What I’m doing is nothing special,” she said. “This is something I want to push for everybody to go after, not only what’s impactful for the community, but to do things that are great for you.”
