MILWAUKEE — The Packers may not play this weekend because of their bye, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of sports going on. Here are three things to Watch in sports this weekend.
It’s a great December weekend for basketball, both college and pro.
Renewal of old rivalry
Marquette renews its legendary rivalry with Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at 3:00 in South Bend. The Fighting Irish now plays basketball in the ACC.
The Marquette-Notre Dame series has had 118 meetings, dating back to 1920. Maybe the heyday for the rivalry was the stretch from 1970-‘81. Both programs were strong at that time and some of those years featured Al McGuire and Digger Phelps.
Badgers visit Iowa
Coming off their exciting victory in their Big Ten opener against Maryland Tuesday night, the Badgers have a conference game at Iowa Sunday evening at 5:30. With his brother Keegan now in the NBA, Kris Murray is starring for the Hawkeyes. He recently became only the third Iowa player ever to have a 30-20 game.
Murray had 31 points and 20 rebounds against Georgia Tech.
Texas two-step
The Bucks make another Texas stop Sunday evening in Houston to play the Rockets.
The month of December is a road-heavy stretch for the Bucks. They play 10 of their 15 games in December on the road.
The Bucks are back home Tuesday night to play Steph Curry and the defending NBA champion Golden State at Fiserv Forum. There’s a heavy Milwaukee flavor to the Warriors. They feature Milwaukee natives Kevon Looney and Jordan Poole, former Milwaukee Panthers star Patrick Baldwin Jr. and former Milwaukee Bucks guard Donte DiVincenzo.
