MILWAUKEE — Ashley Kessen spent Monday morning volunteering her time at Feeding America in Milwaukee, packing boxes full of hygiene products that will be taken to food pantries across the state.

What You Need To Know

  • Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin services 35 counties in Wisconsin

  • They work with more than 400 food banks and pantries in counties in the eastern half of the state

  • They're hoping to raise $75,000 on Giving Tuesday

  • That would feed 300,000 meals for those in need

“We’ve been packing everything from diapers, wipes, baby supplies, sunscreen, everything that one might need," Kessen said. “It’s so important because so many people in our community suffer from getting basic supplies, basic food on an everyday basis so being able to help volunteer our time really gives back to the community."

Kessen works for Thrivent, a personal finance company, that partnered with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin to help with Giving Tuesday donations.

Kathy Jezwinski, the Community Engagement Leader at Thrivent, said they have a big goal to reach.

“We have a hefty goal of raising $75,000. And for $75,000, that will help feed 300,000 healthy meals for our neighbors in need," Jezwinski said.

To meet that goal, Thrivent is is matching donations.

For every $2 someone donates, Thrivent is giving an extra dollar, and will do that until they reach $20,000 in matched donations.

Jezwinski wants people to know that a $2 donation goes a long way.

“Their $2 donation with our $1 match turns into $3 dollars, which provides 12 healthy meals for our neighbors in need," Jezwinski said. "Every dollar makes a difference on Giving Tuesday.”

Scott Marshall, the Vice President of Development and Communications at Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, knows the goal to raise enough money to feed 300,000 meals can be tough, but is confident they can do it.

“We came close last year," Marshall said. "The thing about Wisconsin is Wisconsin takes care of its own. I see it every day. It’s one of my favorite things working at a food bank, knowing although it can be tough out there, we’re keeping that safety net intact because of good people in the community who care and give back.”

That's exactly why Kessen volunteers her time to help Feeding America.

“It’s just so rewarding feeling that accomplishment and knowing that we’re helping the community," Kessen said.

And after a weekend of buying gifts for loved ones — and ourselves — non-profits all across the state are hoping you’ll think of them on Giving Tuesday.
