BROOKFIELD, Wis. — The FIFA World Cup kicked off its first games on Sunday and a Wisconsin based sports store is hosting watch parties for the community.
Brandon Johnston with Stefans Soccer said its Brookfield location will host viewing parties.
“Mainly U.S. games, but also hosting other big games like Spain versus Germany, Mexico, Argentina, all of those types of games as well,” said Johnston.
Stefans Soccer will host viewing parties in a heated tent with multiple televisions going.
Johnston also said he thinks the watch parties will be a hit for families, as the World Cup is happening during an untraditional time: In the winter, over the holidays. He said this is something families can do together.
“You can bring any type of food,” said Johnston. “We had one guy ask to bring brats. You can bring your brats. We prefer no alcohol. We want this to be a family-friendly event.”
Johnston said he is hopeful the watch parties can unite fans watching the games, too.
“If you think about it — besides the Olympics — there’s nothing really besides the World Cup you can celebrate as a nation.”
Tony Rodriguez is a big soccer fan and said he is excited to see some of the “greats” play.
“A lot of the teams I grew up watching and a lot of players are on their last World Cup,” said Rodriguez. “Cristiano would be the last one. Mesi might be on the last one. Those are the guys that I grew up watching from a young guy until now.”
