MADISON, Wis. — Dane County Humane Society is aiming to clear its shelters this weekend.

DCHS reduced adoption fees on all dogs, cats and critters for the weekend of Aug. 13 and 14, as part of its “Clear the Shelters 2022” event.

DCHS will take $50 off all dog adoption fees. Dogs who are part of the “Lonely Hearts Club,” which means they have been at the shelter longer than average, will have adoption fees rated at $100. Dog adoption fees include spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, flea and tick treatment, microchip, heartworm tests for adult dogs and additional veterinary care as needed.

DCHS lowered adoption fees for kittens to $75, while young adult, adult and senior cats can be adopted for a $5 fee. Adoption fees will be waived for Lonely Hearts Club cats. Cat adoption fees include spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, flea and tick treatment, microchip and additional veterinary care as needed.

Critter adoption fees have been reduced to half price. Adoption fees will be waived for Lonely Hearts Club critters. The critter category includes rabbits and other small mammals such as rats and guinea pigs.

DCHS said the event “comes at a critical time as shelters and rescues across the country are experiencing high intake and slower adoptions.”

With that in mind, DCHS is trying to help animals beyond its typical scope of outreach.

“Throughout this week, DCHS has been receiving animal transfers from overcrowded shelters throughout Wisconsin and from other states. Our goal is this event will help all of these animals find new homes thanks to our community,” Lisa Bernard, DCHS public relations coordinator, said.

DCHS said adoptions are a first come, first serve basis. DCHS said adopters should be ready to take their new animal home that day and are encouraged to bring any carriers, collars or leashes they wish to use.

Clear the Shelters will take place at the main DCHS shelter at 5132 Voges Rd., Madison, Wisconsin. DCHS extended its hours for adoptions over the weekend for Clear the Shelters — between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. The shelter will be closed on Monday, Aug. 15.
