DOOR COUNTY, Wis.  — A cherry orchard in Door County said the picking season has been good.

That’s good news for Nicole Crawford. She drove more than an hour from Shawano to Robertson Orchards of Door County to pick tart cherries with her daughter.

“We go once a year,” she said. “This is our first time out at Robertsons. We kind of mix it up through the year.”

She and her daughter filled a bucket with tart cherries. She said her family does the same thing with them every year.

“Usually we wash them, dry them, freeze them,” she said. “In the winter we’ll take them out, put some maple syrup, let them soak, use them on sundaes, waffles, all sorts of stuff.”

Skip Robertson said he loves watching families pick his cherries. He also loves eating the cherries.

“Amazing,” Robertson said, after picking a cherry and taking a bite. He said weather dictates the season’s success.

“We had a very good year. We had good weather,” he said. “A little dry, but we ended up getting quite a bit of rain over the last week, got over an inch of rain, good for that final ripening.”

Payton Crawford said there’s no better way to spend an afternoon with mom.

“I think it’s just really fun to come out here with your family and spend time outdoors just having fun picking cherries,” Payton Crawford said.
