KAUKAUNA, Wis. — Corn farmers in northeast Wisconsin have worked non-stop to catch up with planting.

Weather continues to delay planting, according to Kevin Jarek of UW-Extension.

“Farmers have really been racing to get their crops in the ground,” Jarek said.

The ground is too wet for some farmers to plant. However, farmers have been able to catch up in recent days.

“There is still work to be done, but if you look at where we were just a short while ago, we’ve recovered at a record pace as far as planting,” said Jarek.

He said planting is about 70% done now, most of that work was done in the last two weeks.

Nick Van Wychen said he’s 99% done planting. The Kaukauna grower said he was fortunate his land could avoid the worst of the rain.

“We’re set up to do OK here,” Van Wychen said.

Jarek said planting needs to pick up fast because the longer it’s delayed, the more bushels per day corn farmers will lose.
