MANITOWOC, Wis. — First graders from a Plymouth Elementary School learned about all things agriculture in Wisconsin.

Abigail Martin works in marketing at the Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center in Manitowoc. She greeted the students, their parents, and teachers at the main entrance before taking students into the exhibits.

“This is a great way to showcase one of Wisconsin’s strongest industries and really do it in a fun way,” Martin said.

First grader Nora took part in the field trip. She got to see cows, a calf, and take part in a scavenger hunt that took her through all exhibits at the center.

“Cherry, Wisconsin, cheese, carrot and cow,” Nora said as she checked off items on her list.

Martin said the center serves as a place to introduce children to a career in agriculture, a field lacking in labor.

She said it’s also an opportunity to encourage families to visit Wisconsin’s farms, which would boost agri-tourism.

“Whether that’s a sheep farm to see how wool is grown, or going out to a vegetable farm to pull a carrot right out of the ground,” said Martin. “There are really so many opportunities in Wisconsin to really immerse yourself in agriculture.”
