CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis.— A mourning community gathered around the family of 10-year-old Iliana "Lily" Peters. After being reported missing Sunday evening, her body was found in a wooded area only miles from her school.
Parents and students in the area made a small memorial outside Parkview Elementary, where Peters attended fourth grade.
Tammy Kienholz, a parent who has also has a young daughter, intertwined purple ribbon along the fence to spell Peters' name.
“Just to kind of help the family know that there is support out there at this time,” said Kienholz. “[And] that the community is coming around to help them.”
For Kienholz, like many parents, the concern is undeniable.
“It hits very very close to home,” said Kienholz. “We live four blocks from the scene. It just very tragic; it hits home.”
Shocking the small close knit community, parents were advised to pick up and drop off students. Police presence was also increased at all campuses across the district.
“It’s a combination of compassion and fear; people are fearful of someone out here in our community,” said City of Chippewa Falls Mayor Greg Hoffman. “You don’t think of something like that happening here.”
Support has poured in from across the area, both local and state law enforcement agencies are working on this ongoing investigation.
“I’m hearing from everybody; I’ve got calls from Eau Claire, Rice Lake, everybody in the Chippewa Valley is just shocked,” said Hoffman.
The Chippewa Falls Police Department asked if anyone has any information to share on the case, call 1-800-263-5906.
