WAUWATOSA, Wis. — Nathan Foley has been busy working on a presentation for his Advanced Placement research class.
“We’ve been kind of working through a paper the whole year," Foley explained. "The end result is this paper the whole year, and then the end result is the paper and then this presentation where you answer questions from the panelists and the teacher.”
He spent a long time researching, writing and working on a speech about product packaging.
"My research question is how product packaging affect teenage consumer interpretation of healthfulness of fast food in southeastern Wisconsin," Foley said.
He’s a 4.0 student, involved in multiple AP courses. He’s also involved in a bunch of extra curricular activities outside of school — including orchestra, the local Scout troup, and the National Honors Society.
Those were all things that the Herb Kohl Foundation looked for when deciding who to give out $10,000 scholarships to.
He was one of 174 seniors in Wisconsin to receive the scholarship.
With so much financial aid on the line, Foley said he put a lot of time and effort into his application.
“It was exciting and I’m also still waiting on some local scholarships, but this is the biggest one," Foley said.
Even though he still has several AP tests, presentations, finals and graduation coming up, he’s looking forward to college.
He’s still undecided between Case Western and Northwestern University.
“I’ll be attending a school in the midwest for engineering, specifically civil engineering, although I'm not completely set on that as a major," Foley said.
Foley said he’s honored to have received the scholarship from the Kohl Foundation.
“I’m really grateful to be able to have this scholarship," Foley said. "I didn’t expect to get it so I’m really excited that the work I put in through the school year has paid off."
